| Pussy 2000 - 'Alright' | ||||
| This was co-directed with Contraband - Kal, Kam, and Wes, who animated this using 3D Studio Max. It was my first foray into animation, and I loved the experience.
I knew some people at the label who were putting the record out, and knew that they wanted to make an animated promo. I put out an email on Shooting People asking for animators, and Kal got in touch. I went along to their studio and loved their ideas. The cat and mice idea worked perfectly with the track, and so we worked on the storyboards before the long job of building the city and the characters began. We wanted to throw in as many references to favourite movies as we could - Duel and the Matrix can both be seen. We also put a nod to the Clash sample in there, with the flyer that Pussy picks up being the cover of London Calling. The edit was an ongoing process - dropping in pieces of finished animation into the timeline, and then tweaking bits so they would cut better with the music. The whole promo took around seven weeks from start to finish, which is an incredibly short amount of time in animation terms, but we were working to a deadline and a very short budget. The act and label were both delighted with the finished promo and it got MTV playlisted, which was a buzz. Possibly the weirdest moment was when I passed Top Shop in Oxford St, just as the promo began playing on the big screens at the entrance. |
