I had this idea of doing a horror film, and was into the idea of a girl being chased by an invisible entity. Watching 'An American Werewolf in London' as a kid was another huge influence on me, and the scene where the guy is chased by the wolf on the tube has always stayed with me. This short owes more than a little to that sequence.

I wanted to have a dreamlike element to the whole short - as if it was a nightmare come to life, and so we shot a lot of it at 24 fps, so that when it was projected back at 18 fps it would have a slight slow motion effect. This being a Straight 8 film, shooting and editing in camera, I needed to make every shot perfect.

I managed to persuade Ruth to play the part of the girl being chased after sending her the storyboards, which she found endearing if slightly ridiculous. Finding the location was the next challenge, and I happened upon Leadenhall Market in the City by chance. We were going to shoot on a Sunday, so I knew that it was going to be empty, which was vital. It also gave the location a slight timeless feel, which added to the nightmare quality.

The crew for the shoot was me on camera, along with Shane and Tim. We got the dolly shots with me reclining in a wheelbarrow, and Shane pushing it. Tim was on crowd control duty, which mostly consisted of trying to communicate to confused German tourists to please go no further as we were making a short film.

Ruth was amazing, and did a great job in building the mounting terror. We eventually wrapped around 4 in the afternoon and promptly decamped to the pub. Sid composed the soundtrack to the storyboards, and I knew it would marry with the images perfectly.

'Footsteps' received it's premiere at the Other Cinema in Rupert St, London in 2002.
