Bird - 'Slowly, Slowly'
I met Janie when she was doing an acoustic gig, and she blew me away. When she did 'Slowly, Slowly', I knew that I wanted to make the promo.

I pitched the idea to her, which she liked, and so I storyboarded and assembled the small crew. John, the DOP, did a great job in shooting the super 8 on an unpredictable Canon camera. We also shot some mini DV (where Janie is lying back on the grass), which I then asked Kal from Contraband to create some clouds which I could comp in, amping up the dreamy feel.

Janie had practised lip synching to the track at double speed, so that when the footage was played back at normal speed, everything would be slowed right down. Weirdly, she often now performs the track at that high speed, as the original temp seems really slow to her.

It was a beautiful day, which made the shoot very easy. We got the shot on the roundabout by gaffer taping the camera to a plank which we then taped to the roundabout. The paddling pool shots were the last ones of the day, and although she may not look it, Janie was absolutely freezing. But she trusted me to make her look great.

The editing took around a week, and getting the rushes back turned up a real find. The weird jump that occurs when Janie is standing in the pool is something that's on the negative, although it works beautifully in the edit.

Ben Leighton did a great job with an online at the PPC, matching the digital shots to the Super 8, and adding some more film flare to compliment what was already there.

Janie is currently doing very well in Iceland, where this promo has received several plays. Her album, 'The Insides' is available online and in all good record shops. Check out www.birdwebsite.net
